How Much Tax Does Roblox Take? The 30% Fee Explained
Roblox takes 30% of every Marketplace sale. Here is exactly what the Robux tax applies to, what escapes it, and how to price around it.
The short answer
Roblox takes 30% of every Robux sale between users. Sell a 100 Robux game pass and 70 Robux reach your balance while 30 Robux go to Roblox. Creators call it the โRobux taxโ, although it is really a platform commission โ the official name is the Marketplace fee.
If you just want the numbers for a specific amount, our Robux tax calculator does both directions: price to payout, and payout to the price you need to list.
| Listed price | Roblox takes | You receive | |---|---|---| | 100 R$ | 30 R$ | 70 R$ | | 400 R$ | 120 R$ | 280 R$ | | 1,000 R$ | 300 R$ | 700 R$ | | 10,000 R$ | 3,000 R$ | 7,000 R$ | | 100,000 R$ | 30,000 R$ | 70,000 R$ |
Why Roblox charges it
The fee pays for everything that sits between your product and a playerโs account: payment processing, hosting, moderation, search and discovery, refunds and chargebacks, and the Developer Exchange programme that converts earned Robux into real currency. Every large digital marketplace charges something similar โ the number happens to be the same 30% that the major app stores use.
It is charged once, at the moment of sale, and deducted before the Robux ever appear in your balance. There is no later bill and nothing to declare back to Roblox.
It was not always 30%
Until April 2020 the cut depended on your membership. Builders Club and Premium members kept 70% of a game pass sale; everyone else kept as little as 10%. Roblox then flattened it to a single 30% fee for all creators, which is why older forum threads and videos quote wildly different numbers.
What the 30% actually applies to
This is the part most calculators skip, and it changes how you should price different products.
| Sale type | Roblox keeps | You keep | |---|---|---| | Game pass | 30% | 70% | | Developer product | 30% | 70% | | Avatar item sold in the Marketplace | 70% at the price floor, falling as you price higher | 30%, rising to 70% under progressive revenue share | | Avatar item sold inside an experience | 30% | 30% creator + 40% experience owner | | Limited item resale | 30% | 50% reseller, 10% original creator, 10% seller/affiliate | | Group payout of earned Robux | No extra fee | 100% | | Buying Robux from Roblox | Not applicable | Full amount |
Two things are worth pulling out of that table.
The โ40% taxโ is a different thing. When an avatar item is bought inside someoneโs experience, the item creator gets 30% and the experience owner gets 40%. People who have only seen that split sometimes report the tax as 40%.
Group payouts are not taxed twice. Robux that were already earned โ and already had 30% removed โ can be paid out to group members without a second fee. Selling a co-developer a game pass to pay them would cost you another 30%.
The rounding trap
Roblox rounds your 70% share down to a whole Robux. On round numbers that costs nothing, but on small or odd prices it quietly pushes the real fee above 30%:
| Price | Exact 70% | You actually get | Effective cut | |---|---|---|---| | 5 R$ | 3.5 | 3 R$ | 40.0% | | 25 R$ | 17.5 | 17 R$ | 32.0% | | 75 R$ | 52.5 | 52 R$ | 30.7% | | 30 R$ | 21 | 21 R$ | 30.0% | | 1,000 R$ | 700 | 700 R$ | 30.0% |
The fix is simple: price in multiples of 10 and the rounding never bites.
Working backwards from what you want
The calculation creators actually need is the reverse one. To end up with a target amount, divide it by 0.7 and round up:
- Want 1,000 R$ in hand โ list at 1,429 R$
- Want 10,000 R$ in hand โ list at 14,286 R$
- Want 30,000 R$ for the DevEx minimum โ you need 42,858 R$ of gross sales
Our Robux tax calculator has a dedicated mode for this, and the game pass tax calculator applies it to per-sale pricing. If you run a donation booth, the PLS DONATE tax calculator uses the same maths with donation-sized amounts.
Then there is the second conversion
The 30% fee is only step one. Turning earned Robux into money happens through the Developer Exchange (DevEx), which has its own rate:
- Standard rate: $0.0038 per earned Robux
- Legacy rate: $0.0035 for Robux earned before 5 September 2025
- US 18+ rate: $0.0054 on eligible spend from US players aged 18 and over
- Minimum: 30,000 earned Robux, plus an active Premium subscription, ID verification and a completed tax profile
Stack both steps and a 10,000 Robux sale becomes 7,000 earned Robux, worth roughly $26.60 โ before any income tax you owe in your own country. Our DevEx calculator handles that second step at every rate tier, and Roblox DevEx explained covers the requirements and timings. To see the figure in your currency, use the Robux to Euro calculator or one of our 45 currency converters.
Can you avoid the Robux tax?
Not legitimately, and you should be sceptical of anyone claiming otherwise. The fee is applied by Roblox on its own servers before the Robux are credited, so no website, script or browser extension can remove it. โTax-free Robuxโ pages exist to harvest account credentials.
What you can do is reduce what it costs you in practice:
- Price in multiples of 10 so rounding never adds to the fee.
- Bundle small items instead of selling several tiny passes.
- Use group payouts to split revenue with collaborators.
- Plan gross targets, not net ones โ 42,858 R$ of sales, not 30,000.
- Check whether an avatar item priced further above its floor earns you a bigger share.
Frequently asked
Is the Roblox tax 30% or 40%? 30% on game passes and developer products. The 40% figure is the experience ownerโs share of an avatar item sold in their game.
Does Premium remove the tax? No. Premium changes your monthly Robux stipend and purchase bonuses, not the Marketplace fee.
Do I pay tax when I buy Robux? Not the Marketplace fee. Retail prices already include local VAT or sales tax, and app store purchases carry their own markup.
Is it taxed again at DevEx? No, but DevEx pays out real income and you are responsible for declaring it where you live.
